TriesteCastello di MiramareMaximilian and Charlotte’s seaside residence, the Novara Room, Cesare Dell’Acqua’s history paintings, and the historic park above the Gulf of Trieste.<p>Miramare stands at the tip of the Grignano promontory, where Istrian white stone meets the Gulf of Trieste. Commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg as a residence for himself and Charlotte of Belgium, the eclectic castle was designed by Austrian engineer Carl Junker and built between 1856 and 1860. Gothic, medieval and Renaissance references come together in a seaside residence shaped around its view of the water.</p><p>The rooms retain furnishings and collections connected with the archducal household. Maximilian’s study is identified by the museum as the Novara Room; the catalogue also places Charlotte’s painting <em>Yacht Phantasie</em> there. In the Sala Storica, Cesare Dell’Acqua’s commissioned history cycle records episodes from life at Miramare, including the 1865 oil painting of Empress Elisabeth’s arrival.</p><p>The residence and its 22-hectare park belong to one designed landscape. Park designer Wilhelm Knechtel arranged woodland to the east and Mediterranean gardens with formal parterres near the castle and sea, transforming a karst promontory that had held pasture, vineyards and a small oak wood. The smaller Castelletto, designed by Junker in 1856, served as an occasional residence while the main castle was being built. Continue the waterfront story in Trieste at <a href="/en/attractions/piazza-unita-d-italia">Piazza Unità d’Italia</a>, or look across the city from <a href="/en/attractions/san-giusto-hill">San Giusto Hill</a>. The building you see is mainly eleventh century and later, Romanesque and Gothic, with a 73-meter bell tower, and beneath the altar area a ninth-century crypt with frescoes. It is a distinct religious component within the wider UNESCO property Archaeological Area and the Patriarchal Basilica of Aquileia, inscribed in 1998, and not a separately inscribed site. Glass walkways let you look down onto the older floor.

A steel stairway of roughly five hundred steps winds down through the dark to the floor, where stalagmites rise beside two enormous geodetic pendulums that have measured the earth's tides and the faintest tectonic shifts since the 1950s, feeding data straight to Italy's national oceanography institute. The cave holds a constant 11 degrees Celsius year round, so the guided walk feels like stepping into another season entirely. Bring a light jacket even in August.

The Palazzo del Governo, the town hall and the Grand Hotel Duchi d’Aosta ring three sides in Austro-Hungarian style, evidence of the decades when Trieste was the Habsburg empire’s main port. At the base of the town hall, two bronze figures nicknamed Mikeze and Jakeze have struck the hour since 1875. The Fountain of the Four Continents, carved between 1751 and 1754, anchors the center, its allegorical figures a reminder of the trade routes that made Trieste rich. At blue hour, when the lamps come up and the sea turns the same color as the sky, the square becomes the Mitteleuropean stage set it has always been.

The Thurn und Taxis family has owned it since the 19th century, and in 1912 they hosted a guest who changed how the castle is remembered: Rainer Maria Rilke, who began his Duino Elegies here after hearing, so the story goes, a voice in the wind off the sea. More than eighteen rooms are open to visitors, hung with portraits, arms and the family's own history, and a cliffside path, the Sentiero Rilke, follows the poet's own walk along the rock face toward Sistiana. The gardens look straight across the water to Trieste.
Cividale del FriuliUNESCOTempietto LongobardoSix stucco saints, Lombard art, UNESCO Longobards in Italy, Natisone gorgeThe Tempietto Longobardo is a small oratory built around the middle of the eighth century as a palace chapel in Cividale, the first Lombard duchy in Italy, and perched almost over the Natisone gorge. Inside, six nearly life-size female saints in stucco stand in a procession high above the doorway, set among frescoes and carved decoration that mix Roman, Byzantine and Germanic traditions. It is the finest surviving work of early medieval art in northern Italy, and part of the 2011 UNESCO listing Longobards in Italy: Places of Power. The oratory is tiny and belongs to the Santa Maria in Valle monastery complex, so allow time to see both.

The present castle dates to 1517, rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed its predecessor, with exterior decoration contributed by Giovanni da Udine, a pupil of Raphael. Inside, the civic museums combine a picture gallery, an archaeological and numismatic museum, a Risorgimento museum, and galleries of drawings, prints and photography, with works by Tiepolo, who also painted extensively around the city below, among the collection's highlights. From the loggia, the view stretches on clear days from the Alps to the Adriatic.

About six hundred of the roughly sixteen hundred plant species native to the limestone Carso plateau grow here, planted in the settings where each would naturally occur, alongside a medicinal-plant collection and a garden designed to attract pollinators. A cooperative called Rogos manages the garden day to day, though regional oversight took over administration in 2016, and the site holds membership in Botanic Gardens Conservation International. The garden opens each year from March 21 through the second Sunday of October, and admission is free.

The wide, naturally lit entrance made the cave an obvious sanctuary: two stone benches still flank a roughly squared limestone altar, and a carved plaque of Mithras slaying the sacred bull, the cult's central image, marks the space as a place of ritual rather than shelter. Excavation recovered around four hundred coins along with oil lamps and small vessels, everyday offerings left by worshippers over generations. The site remains one of Italy's rarer Mithraic sanctuaries, cataloged through the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Cave Registry rather than run as a conventional museum.

German command evacuated in late April 1945, Yugoslav Partisan forces entered the city on May 1, and the occupying German garrison ultimately surrendered to New Zealand troops, closing a twenty-month occupation whose underground infrastructure survives largely intact beneath the modern city.

The complex now belongs to the Rosazzo Foundation, which farms the surrounding hillside as one of Friuli's most prized vineyards, so a visit here pairs easily with a glass of the abbey's own white wine on the terrace outside.

The townspeople are said to have sent a dog across instead, cheating him out of payment. The stone bridge dates to 1442, replacing an earlier wooden crossing, but it didn't survive intact: retreating Italian troops blew it up in October 1917 during the Caporetto rout, and it was rebuilt afterward to its original silhouette, two asymmetric arches spanning 22 and 19 meters over the gorge below.

Alternating bands of rose and white stone wrap a ground floor of ten graceful arches, with a central balcony and twin triforas above; a fire gutted the building in 1876, and it was faithfully rebuilt afterward in the same Venetian Gothic style. It anchors Piazza Libertà, often called the most beautiful Venetian-style square outside Venice itself, and now serves as a venue for exhibitions rather than municipal government.
AquileiaArea Archeologica di AquileiaRoman river port, forum colonnade, once a major imperial city, mostly unexcavated beneath the townRome founded Aquileia in 181 BCE on the Natissa river, and it grew into one of the empire's largest cities, a trading hub linking the Mediterranean to central Europe, before Attila's Huns destroyed it in 452. The excavated area preserves stretches of the forum colonnade, a Roman basilica, late-antique warehouses (horrea), baths, residential complexes and the remains of the river port that made the city rich, while most of ancient Aquileia is thought to still lie unexcavated beneath the fields and the modern town. It forms part of a wider UNESCO listing alongside the separately managed Patriarchal Basilica, whose floor mosaics are the largest of their kind anywhere in the West.
