The Thurn und Taxis family has owned it since the 19th century, and in 1912 they hosted a guest who changed how the castle is remembered: Rainer Maria Rilke, who began his Duino Elegies here after hearing, so the story goes, a voice in the wind off the sea. More than eighteen rooms are open to visitors, hung with portraits, arms and the family's own history, and a cliffside path, the Sentiero Rilke, follows the poet's own walk along the rock face toward Sistiana. The wide, naturally lit entrance made the cave an obvious sanctuary: two stone benches still flank a roughly squared limestone altar, and a carved plaque of Mithras slaying the sacred bull, the cult's central image, marks the space as a place of ritual rather than shelter. Excavation recovered around four hundred coins along with oil lamps and small vessels, everyday offerings left by worshippers over generations. The site remains one of Italy's rarer Mithraic sanctuaries, cataloged through the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Cave Registry rather than run as a conventional museum.
