The name is often explained as a contraction of casa mogli, house of wives, a nod to the seafaring men who left for long stretches. In the Late Middle Ages the town flourished as a seaport, earning the nickname city of a thousand white sails. That maritime pride peaks every May at the Sagra del Pesce, when fish is fried for thousands in a pan reportedly about four meters across on the harborfront.
