Milano-Torino

The forerunner of the Americano, before soda water joined the mix. Pure Campari and sweet vermouth.

Equal parts Campari and sweet vermouth over ice, stirred briefly, nothing else: the Milano-Torino is the Americano before the soda arrived. With no soda to soften it, the vermouth matters more, so choose a rich, spiced rosso that can stand up to the Campari. Expressing the orange peel over the top is the finish, so don't skip it.

Lombardy

The name maps the bottles: Campari from Milan, vermouth from Turin. The Americano, first poured at Gaspare Campari's café in Milan in the 1860s, descends from it, and the Milano-Torino still belongs to the early-evening aperitivo.
