North of Lake Como, the Valtellina valley runs between the Rhaetian Alps and the Orobie mountains. Its south-facing slopes carry terraces held by dry-stone walls. Nebbiolo, known here as Chiavennasca, is the principal grape of Valtellina Superiore. The sandy ground derived from granite and the work of maintaining the terraces are part of this mountain wine’s setting.
The grape area is a precisely delimited part of Valtellina in Sondrio province, with vineyards chiefly on the slopes along the right bank of the Adda.
