Rosso di Montalcino is made entirely from Sangiovese. The production territory is enclosed by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Its hills contain sandstone, limestone, alberese and galestro, with soils ranging towards sandy or clay-rich textures. These different settings give the grape several vineyard environments within one precisely defined area of southeastern Tuscany.
The grape area is the territory of Montalcino in Siena province as delimited on November 30, 2011. That dated boundary defines the denomination’s area.
