Whole wheels in the town square

Pienza celebrates its pecorino with a fair and a game played with cheese.

Visit Tuscany describes Pienza’s September Fiera del Cacio as a celebration of pecorino and other local foods. During the fair, the Palio del Cacio al fuso brings the town’s contrade into a contest with whole cheese wheels.

Players push and roll the wheels around a small wooden spindle set in the main square. Here the shape of the cheese becomes part of the town’s public life: a wheel to share at the table also takes its turn in the piazza.
