A lead grape with different label roles

The Vesuvio specification shows both blends and varietal wines.

In the Vesuvio rules, Piedirosso has two distinct roles. The red and rosato blends, including the corresponding Lacryma Christi wines, require at least 50% Piedirosso. Wines specifically named Vesuvio Piedirosso require at least 85%. Reading the complete label therefore tells you whether the grape leads a broader blend or appears under its own varietal name.

Two Vesuvio grape rules

Vesuvio DOC Piedirosso requires at least 85% Piedirosso in the vineyard composition. The generic Vesuvio red and rosé styles instead require at least 50%, with other grapes permitted under their separate rules. The specification also provides a transition period for vineyards already eligible under earlier rules.

An Italian wine setting

This Vesuvio example comes from the delimited area in the province of Naples, including all of Boscotrecase, Trecase and San Sebastiano al Vesuvio and parts of other listed municipalities. The boundary belongs to Vesuvio DOC.
