Picolit among marl and sandstone

Terraced hills and the local ponca soils set the scene for Friuli’s Picolit.

In the eastern Friulian hills, alternating layers of marl and sandstone form the ground known locally as ponca. Erosion helped make terracing part of the vineyard landscape. Picolit is the principal grape of this denomination, while Cialla is a more precisely delimited subzone with its own rules. The full place name gives this wine a particular home within Friuli’s broader wine country.

Grape drying is permitted

The specification permits grape drying on the vine, on racks, or in crates, including controlled environments. It does not make a single drying method mandatory for every wine.

The eastern hills of Udine province

The delimited area involves nineteen municipalities in the central-eastern part of Udine province, near Slovenia. The Cialla subzone lies in the northern part of Prepotto, close to Cividale del Friuli.
