Many grapes, one landscape of ponca
Marl and sandstone link the eastern Friulian hills.
Friuli Colli Orientali brings together numerous white and red grape varieties, including Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Pignolo and Schioppettino. The shared ground is the alternating marl and sandstone called ponca in Friulian. Its tendency to erode led growers to terrace the hills. Those terraces are a visible thread connecting the different wines of this eastern Friulian landscape.
