Cesanese on the red earth near Piglio
The foothills of the Ernici provide a setting for two Cesanese varieties.
Cesanese di Affile and Cesanese Comune, alone or together, form the principal grape base of Cesanese del Piglio. The area’s red soils developed from limestone terrain associated with the Ernici mountains. Iron and aluminum oxides contribute to their dark red color, while clay and silt give varying textures. This hill territory places the wine in a specific part of inland Lazio.
