Barbaresco
- Minimum
- 26 months, including 9 in wood
Barbaresco is a red Nebbiolo wine whose Riserva receives a longer minimum maturation.
Minimum maturation starts November 1 of the harvest year.
A single grape variety expresses a compact group of Langhe hills.
Barbaresco comes from Nebbiolo alone. The specification places its vineyards on hills above the Tanaro and describes layered marl and sand as part of their setting.
Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso give the denomination its central geography. Knowing these place names offers a more precise way into the wine than treating all of the Langhe as one vineyard. The label may also carry an approved additional geographical mention, identifying a smaller named area.
Barbaresco requires at least 26 months of aging, including nine months in wood. Riserva extends the overall minimum to 50 months, also with at least nine in wood.
The aging clock starts on November 1 of the harvest year. The Riserva mention therefore marks a longer required maturation, while the grape remains Nebbiolo.
The grape-production area includes Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso, plus the defined part of San Rocco Seno d’Elvio in Alba. All are in Cuneo province, Piemonte.
