Moscato

Moscato is a name to read closely: Moscato Bianco is specified for Moscato d’Asti, Moscato Giallo for Fior d’Arancio, and Moscato di Scanzo for Scanzo.

Moscato Bianco in the Asti rules

The full grape name and wine style both matter.

The Asti specification provides a concrete example of Moscato Bianco: white Asti and Moscato d’Asti require at least 97% of that grape in their vineyard base. Rosé Asti follows a different rule, combining Moscato Bianco with Brachetto. Looking at the full wine name avoids treating every Asti style, or every grape called Moscato, as the same thing.

An Italian wine setting

The Asti denomination defines a grape-growing area across listed municipalities in the provinces of Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo. This Piedmont example locates one important use of Moscato Bianco; it does not identify the birthplace of every Moscato variety.
