Grignolino

Grignolino gives its name to Grignolino d’Asti DOC, which permits a small share of Freisa alongside its principal grape.

Grignolino with room for Freisa

Grignolino d’Asti is a named red-wine example.

Grignolino d’Asti DOC is based on Grignolino, with Freisa permitted in the vineyards up to 10%. The additional grape is allowed, not compulsory. That small distinction helps when reading the denomination: it identifies a wine centered on Grignolino without requiring every producer to use the same two-grape blend.

An Italian wine setting

The Grignolino d’Asti area is defined by a list of municipalities in the Asti district. Within that area, only hillside vineyards with suitable position and orientation qualify. These are requirements for the named wine, not a universal rule for growing Grignolino.
