Filu ’e ferru is Sardinian acquavite distilled from wine and/or grape pomace, also known as abba ardente.
The name comes with a traditional explanation, recorded by Laore Sardegna.
According to the explanation reported by the regional agency, bottles of clandestinely produced acquavite were buried and marked with a piece of wire left above ground so they could be found again. The agency presents this as a possible origin of the name.
Laore Sardegna describes double distillation of wine and/or pomace, separating the heads and tails and keeping the heart of the distillate. Its regional product sheet also mentions versions flavored with local plants.
