White soils and Asti sands

Barbera d’Asti belongs to a landscape of low hills and varied sedimentary soils.

The Barbera d’Asti specification describes two telling parts of its landscape: older marl-rich white soils and the younger Asti sands beside the Tanaro. These are different settings within a broad hillside wine area. Barbera is the central grape, and the full denomination name helps you place this expression within Piedmont’s wider Barbera culture.

The standard grape rule

The general rule requires at least 90% Barbera, but the specification also preserves eligibility for certain previously registered vineyards under an earlier rule.

Asti and part of Alessandria

The defined production area extends across named municipalities in Asti province and part of Alessandria province. The vineyard landscape is largely one of low hills.
