Martina Franca is the largest town in the Valle d’Itria, the region better known for scattered conical trulli, but its historic center trades that rustic look for an unbroken run of white Baroque and Rococo architecture, built on the wealth of trade in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Wrought-iron balconies and scrolled stone portals line lanes that curve deliberately, following the old walls rather than a grid. The seventeenth-century Ducal Palace of the Caracciolo family anchors the main piazza and hosts the Festival della Valle d’Itria, founded in 1975 and known for reviving rare operas. The Franca in the name refers to tax exemptions granted centuries ago to attract settlers.

Getting there
Martina Franca has a station on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line connecting Bari, Taranto and Lecce; the historic center is a short uphill walk. By car, park outside the walls and walk in.
Accessibility
The curving historic lanes have uneven stone paving and some slopes; parts are manageable on wheels but not all.

Walking the old town is free. Festival della Valle d’Itria performances are ticketed and booked separately.

If you come for the festival, book opera tickets well ahead: the courtyard is small by design and the audience is serious. Otherwise wander the lanes at dusk, when the white stone turns gold.

How long should you spend in Martina Franca?

Two and a half hours covers the basilica, the palace and a slow walk through the lanes. Add an evening if you want a drink in Piazza Roma or a show at the opera festival.
