Verdicchio in an inland valley
The upper Esino runs north through a vineyard territory away from the sea.
Verdicchio is the principal grape of Verdicchio di Matelica. The vineyards occupy an inland setting along the early course of the Esino, where the valley runs parallel to the Apennines and the Adriatic coast. River deposits in the valley meet marl, limestone and sandstone on the surrounding ground. Cold winters and warm summers distinguish this inland vineyard environment.
