The berry of woods and heathland

The University of Trieste records Vaccinium myrtillus along the Alps and through much of the Apennines. It is the wild bilberry meant by this page, not a name covering every commercial blueberry variety or every red woodland berry.

Try it in the kitchen

Eat bilberries raw, or use them in jams and syrups. Try a little bilberry preserve on a ricotta tart, where the dark fruit makes a clear contrast with the pale filling.
