The Alto Adige denomination includes both red and rosé expressions of the grape.

Lagrein has named red and rosé styles in Alto Adige, with Kretzer also used for the rosé. The denomination’s vineyards connect the Adige valley floor with hills and mountain slopes. Alluvial ground below contrasts with gravelly moraine-derived soils higher up, while porphyry appears between Merano and Bolzano.
