Benedictine monks began this abbey in the late tenth century on the summit of Mount Pirchiriano, and it has been rebuilding itself on that rock ever since. The approach is part of the point: the Scalone dei Morti, 243 steps between walls once set with burial niches, climbs to the marble Zodiac Portal, a twelfth-century sculptural masterpiece.

Inside are a Romanesque and Gothic church and a terrace over the Susa Valley. Umberto Eco drew on its silhouette for The Name of the Rose, and a regional law names it the symbolic monument of Piedmont. Rosminian fathers, who restored the site from 1835, still look after it.

Getting there
By car take the A32 to the Avigliana Centro exit, follow the signs for the Sacra and park at Piazzale Croce Nera, then climb the steep 800 meters on foot. Without a car, take the train to Avigliana and continue by bus (a combined train and bus ticket runs in season), or hike one of the marked trails.
Accessibility
Visitors with reduced mobility may drive closer to the entrance. A gently sloping alternative route with three lifts reaches the church and the New Monastery ruins; the Stairway of the Dead is not step-free.

Self-guided entry €10; reduced €8 for ages 6 to 18, over-65s, families and Abbonamento Musei or Torino+Piemonte Card holders. A guided visit in Italian is €15. Modest dress is expected in the church. Last updated September 2026. Prices change, so check the official site before you go.

Save the terrace for last: on a clear day the view runs down the Susa Valley toward Turin and across to the Alps. Wear proper shoes, because the stone stairs are steeper than they look.

How long should you spend at the Sacra di San Michele?

About 90 minutes for the abbey, stairs and terrace. The approach on foot from the car park is steep, so add time for it.

It inspired Umberto Eco’s novel, which drew on its silhouette. The book’s abbey is fictional, but the mountain setting is unmistakable.
